Spirit Work: The Holy Spirit

Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Psalm 51:11 (KJV)

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:26 (KJV)

In the King James Version New Testament, the Holy Spirit is likewise referred to as the Holy Ghost (Pneuma Agion). The Holy Spirit is a personal being, the Spirit of God, that can dwell within every believer. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, who among other things provides guidance, consolation, strength, and support .

The Hebrew Ruach Kodesh, which is also written in English as Ruach haKodesh or ruach haqodesh, is translated as "holy spirit." It can be found in scripture in Psalm 51:1.

The powerful word in Greek used to describe the Holy Spirit in John 14:26 is "Paraclete," which is translated in the King James Version as the "Comforter." "Paraclete" is also often translated as "Helper" or "Advocate." The Spirit of God dwells within the worker as the "Helper"--the "Paraclete." It is what is meant when someone works "in Spirit."

The Holy Spirit is present in all places, it knows all and sees all, and the faithful recognize that there are no secrets in the Spirit. Other titles for the Holy Spirit include Spirit of Truth, Lightful Spirit of God Almighty, Holy Breath, Almighty Breath, Giver of Life, Helper, Comforter, Counselor, and Supporter. The most powerful name of Ruach Kodesh and the Spirit of God are one and the same.

In order to receive the Spirit into your work, ask for it.

Recite Psalm 51 and then recite one or more of the prayers below--or another similar prayer. While reciting Psalm 51, likewise keep in mind the meanings of "Paraclete." Any heavy burden should be removed by the Helper, Comforter, Counselor, Supporter, and Advocate.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar. Psalm 51(KJV)
The words Ruach haKodesh denote the Pneuma Agion, thus representing the blessed names of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

O Lord Jesus Christ, who before ascending into Heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish your work in the souls of your apostles, disciples, and servants, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me, to perfect in my soul the work of your love and your grace. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom, that I may aspire only after the things that are eternal; the Spirit of Understanding, to enlighten my mind with the light of God's Divine truth; the Spirit of Counsel, that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining Heaven; the Spirit of Fortitude, that I may bear my yoke with you and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation; the Spirit of Knowledge, that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the knowledge of the Saints; the Spirit of Piety, that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable; the Spirit of Fear, that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease my Father in Heaven. Mark me, Dear Lord, with the sign of your true disciples, and animate me in all things with your Spirit. Amen. * Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Simple Prayer to Receive Aid from the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, you are my Advocate, who stands beside me, as I go through life. You stand beside me. Give me good council--always my Helper. Spirit of Wisdom, I seek Divine inspiration and understanding to do my spiritual working.* May I do good work in Spirit. In Jesus' name, amen.

*The three prayers do not specify it exactly, but where I have added the asterisk in each prayer would seem to be the ideal point to state a request for help with any specific work which is planned at this time.

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:16-18 (KJV)

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning. John 15:26-27 (KJV)

The Holy Spirit is revealed in the Scriptures in Proverbs 8:22-35 as the Spirit of Wisdom serving as the Helper of God during Creation.
The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men. Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. Proverbs 8:22-35 (KJV)
The presence of the Spirit was affirmed in the early Christian community at Pentecost in Acts 2. The feast of Pentecost is celebrated fifty days after Easter Sunday, but the servant of God may call upon the Holy Spirit anytime.
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2: 1-4 (KJV)
