Spirit Work: Jehovah

The name, Jehovah, dervies from the four Hebrew letters ???? which are Yod, Hey, Vau, Hey. These four consonants are frequentlyly called the Tetragrammaton (from Greek te'tra-, meaning "four," and gram'ma, "letter"--aka the "four letters").

"Jehovah" is the most commonly used English pronunciation of this divine name, although "Yahweh" is favoured by most Hebrew scholars. In Hebrew, these are written right to left. In English, these are written left to right as JHVH, IHVH, YHVH, or YHWH. In the King James Version, his name is often written as LORD. Jehovah is worshiped by many Christians, Jews, and others, including many practitioners of hoodoo, as the Father, God Creator of Heaven and Earth. Christian hoodoo practitioners often invoke him and honor him under the name of Jehovah.

Jehovah is described as a powerful and appreciative God. "For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister." Hebrews 6:10

The servants of Jehovah God know that their labor is not in vain in connection with their Lord. Jehovah values whole-hearted service of his followers.

To faithfully endure in Jehovah's service when there is strong cultural presure to serve only secular goals, that makes one's service a worthy offering to Jehovah. He will make the mustard seed of that service grow. "Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof." (Matthew 13:32)

The faithful man Boaz was acquainted with this wonderful aspect of Jehovah, for he said to the Moabitess Ruth, who lovingly cared for her widowed mother-in-law: "The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust." (Ruth 2:12) Indeed Ruth was rewarded by Jehovah. She married Boaz and became an ancestress in the line of King David. (Ruth 4:13) That example is but one of many in the bible showing Jehovah’s appreciation for his servants. For example, Jehovah also rewarded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian when he rescued Jeremiah the prophet. Later, Ebedmelech was protected and not "given into the hand of the men" whom Ebedmelech feared. (Jeremiah 38:8-13 39:16-18)

Jehovah deeply appreciates the efforts of followers who sincerely seek to do his will, and he richly rewards them. "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue" (2 Pet 1:3) All things that pertain to life and godliness, prosperity of soul and health of body as well, Jehovah has promised to bless the obedient believer with all heavenly and earthly blessings. The prosperity of Jehovah flows out to every area of the believer's life.

The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee. They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power; To make known to the sons of men his mighty acts, and the glorious majesty of his kingdom. Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion endureth throughout all generations. (Psalms145:8-13)
His followers must believe that Jehovah is a powerful and upright God. "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Hebrews 11:6) Faith should be built on the pillars of knowledge, convection, and trust of who Jehovah is, and that he will deliver what he has promised.

"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." (3 John 1:2) With blessings such as true internal peace, spiritual courage, increased desire for kindness, holiness, and emotional and physical healings, the possibilities of receiving great blessings from God are almost boundless. Persistent service brings rewards. Jehovah's servants are spiritually well fed.

Jehovah is served with godly devotion. "The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is his delight." (Proverbs15:8) Hoodoo practitioners frequently offer praise and service with psalms and other verses from the King James Version. "For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil." (1 Peter 3:12)

Jehovah, through his Son, Jesus, encourages his followers to pray to him in secret. Thus, many hoodoo practitioners keep their service with hoodoo secret.

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. (Matthew 6:5-6)
And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. (1 John 3:22)
