Hobbit's Margarita

When do Hobbits drink margaritas?

Actually Hobbits don’t—well, not traditionally anyway.

However, some members of the Ocean City Surf Club do!  The Ocean City Surf Club is an environmental nonprofit 501(c)3 dedicated to protecting and preserving our natural resources for future generations.

The Ocean City Surf Club margarita program involves Ocean City restaurants creatively mixing up their own specialty margaritas in support of the goals of the Ocean City Surf Club (OCSC). The Hobbit in OC is just one of many participating restaurants.

I could not really resist sharing this bit of whimsy.

A bit about the Hobbit Restaurant

When The Hobbit Restaurant opened in 1977, it clearly sought to provide good food worthy of a Hobbit’s table. If you have read JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, or seen any of the LOTR trilogy movies, The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003)—you might understand what I mean by that last statement.

I believe I discovered it in the summer of 1978 and talked a friend into going to eat there with me. The Hobbit Restaurant's original location was a cozy white beach house on 82nd Street and Coastal Highway. Service at the Hobbit was warm and friendly and the waiting staff wore marvelous Hobbit teeshirts! This ninety seat restaurant, with lace tablecloths, separate dining rooms, with Lord of the Rings and Hobbit decor plus lounge and bar. No wonder it quickly became a favorite of locals and Ocean City visitors alike.

In 1983, The Hobbit moved into a newly constructed, much larger building at the current location on 81st Street and the Bay. I later ate there with my husband. This second version of the Hobbit “served innovative cuisine in a stunning setting featuring bay views and distinct dining rooms. With its landmark redwood structure, high peaks, white columns and soaring chimneys The Hobbit grew into an Ocean City destination and welcomed thousands of patrons and friends for 22 years.” For reasons unknown to me, it closed. A lot of the Tolkien memorabila was sold off.

A third edition of The Hobbit Restaurant opened in April 2008, located in The Rivendell Condominium Complex at 81st Street on the Bay. The Hobbit remains under the same ownership and management.
