Doubtless, gentle reader, you will notice this page is more a reflection of history than folklore. I intend to add more little known information about the statue of Freedom, which will reflect its curious history and folklore. --Myth Woodling

No copyright date is given on this card, but I believe I bought it in the early
1990's or the late 1980's.

Our Lady Moon smiles benignly over Washington, DC. Commanding the
center of attetion is the Washington Monument, honoring the Father of
our Country and first president, George Washington. To the left of this
phallic obelisk, is the Lincoln Memorial. To the right, in the distance, is the
Capitol building.

The U.S. Capitol at Washington faces the east and stands on a plateau 88 feet
above the level of the Potomac. Dr. Wm Thornton won the prize offered by
Congress for the best design for the building, and President Washington laid
the cornerstone in September 1793.

There is no copyright date on this card. From the quality of the ink, this post
card apparently goes back to the 1960's.

The statue, which can be seen in this post card atop the Capitol dome, was
originally known as "Freedom Triumphant in War and Peace," or simply
"Freedom." This allegorical figure has been popularly called "Columbia."
