Faery Houses

Faery houses are a form of temporary artform practiced by old and young alike. In some ways they are similar to the spirit houses in the Japanese Shinto religion. Hence, these artworks are theoretically created for faery-spirits to dwell in or for the use of the faeries.

Legend says faeries--the small rustic or woodland spirits--construct their dwellings and clothing out of found objects rather than shaping and creating something entirely new from scratch. Thus, when people create a faery house, they often try to make it look like something a faery might have created for her or himself, or something that would be very inviting to a woodland spirit.

Faeries are said to create their house using the pre-existent natural envrionment. This faery house incorporates not only a tree, but uses a mushroom growing at the base of the tree as part of the furniture. This structure contains some found objects as well as natural tree branches. A hunk of wood left over from human construction creates one of the slats of the side of the house. Clearly this house was either erected by a very creative faery or a clever human.
Sometimes you'll spy faery pavilions discretely tucked in a wooded area. Faeries enjoy parties too!
Next time you are hiking or taking a walk through the forest, keep you eyes open for possible faery dwellings sitting quietly among the trees. You'll have to ask yourself what human left this here for the fearies, or did the faeries build it themselves?
