Seashell Madonna

This is a small outdoor Catholic shrine, honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the home of a Sicilian American family. Note the seashells around the base of the statue, which is reministent of the title Stella Maris (Star of the Sea).

In the Roman Catholic Church, the Madonna, Jesus' mother, is venerated in her own right as the Mother of God. As the Mediatrix, the Madonna intercedes between humanity and God. She is the Co-redemptrix of humanity.

According to one American-Sicilian, "God is God, but Mary is God's Mother, and--as any one from Mediteranean families can attest--Mom is more important than anyone else, therefore Mary outranks God."

Other titles of the Madonna include: Domina, Mater Dei (Mother of God), Mater Creatoris (Mother of our Creator), Maestā (Majesty), Beatissima (Most Blessed), Sanctissima (Most Holy), Causa nostrae laetitiae (Cause of our Joy), Sedes sapientiae (Seat of Wisdom), Regina Coeli (Queen of heaven), Regina Angelorum (Queen of Angels), Regina familiae (Queen of the family), Regina pacis (Queen of Peace), Regina in caelum assumpta (Queen assumed into heaven), Regina Sanctissimi Rosarii (Queen of the most holy Rosary), Dei genetrix, Virgo Deipara, Theotokos (God-bearer), Pietā, Mater Dolorosa (Mother of Sorrows), Mater boni Consilii (Mother of Good Council), Mater Salvatoris (Mother of our Savior), Mater admirabilis (Mother most admirable), Salus infirmorum (Health of the sick), Consolatrix afflictorum (Comforter of the afflicted), Stella matutina (Morning star), Rosa mystica (Mystical rose).

Beneath your compassion, We take refuge, O Mother of God: do not despise our petitions in time of trouble: but rescue us from dangers, only pure, only blessed one.
