All Hallow's Pumpkin Seed Divination

All Hallow's Pumpkin Seed Divination

Around All Hallow's Eve, clean and dry the seeds from a pumpkin lantern. Put a few of the dry seeds in a bowl. Spread a plain cloth. Recite the following over the bowl:
Seeds, seeds,
Let me see
What my future
Bodes for me!
Close your eyes and scatter a small handfull of seeds on the cloth. Open your eyes and study shapes or patterns the seeds form. This divination is rather like the older practice of reading tea leaves. Indeed one website suggested that the reader consult sources about "Tea-cup Reading and Fortune Telling by Tea Leaves" to understand the symbology of possible signs.

Other pages suggested coloring the seeds different colors with permanent makers and then reading meanings from the colors. Apparently coloring the seeds is an idea taken from Marie Bruce, The Witch's Almanac: Practical Magic Spells for Every Season 2009.

I would also suggest counting how many seeds fell on the cloth.

This form of divination is a suggestion of what could be done with seeds left over from carving a pumpkin. I found versions of divining with pumpkin seeds on more than one website with similar or identical wording.

Here's an example of one of the pages I found: Spell: A Halloween Divination With Pumpkin Seeds, October 25, 2012.

I suspect this pumpkin seed divination is from the late 20th century. The earilest source that I know about is the author Gerina Dunwich. In Everyday Wicca: Magickal Spells Throughout the Year (1997), she wrote about various traditional forms of Samhain divinations, adding: "However, I like to be different and perform my Samhain divinations with the seeds from the pumpkins that I carve into Jack-o'-lanterns.
